January Update
Hi!

* Delivery time will be known on Friday, February 5th. *
Parents needed to re-configure the gym; equpiment needs to be moved around - After renovations are completed. Please be on the lookout for more information regarding the time and date.
PLEASE RESPOND AND LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE AVAILABLE ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH TO UNLOAD THE TUMBLE TRACK
RENOVATIONS
The board of directors has been hard at work applying for various grants and putting to use the fundraising dollars that we have earned over the last year. This money is going towards some renovating at the gym.
Renovations are scheduled to start this week January 25 – 29th and will take approximately two weeks. The workers will clue up their day at 3:00pm so it will not affect our training schedules.
At the same time our renovations are taking place we will also be getting the lights changed in our facility. These are scheduled to take place Wednesday, January 27 – Friday, January 29th. We will talk further on Friday to see if additional days and times are needed. These workers will also clue up their day at 3:00pm every day so training will not be affected.
NEW EQUIPMENT
We have a new piece of equipment on order (and one of the reasons for the renovations). This piece of equipment is a 40 foot long tumble track. Essentially it is a long trampoline. The landing area is an additional 12 feet – so we need to make room for this piece of equipment to fit into the gym.
I received an email today that the tumble track should arrive in town on Monday, February 8th. We will need parent volunteers to unload this from the truck. We will also need MANY volunteers to move the equipment to new places in the gym once the renovations are finished.

Fall Notes
Welcome back to fall training! The coaches are looking forward to the upcoming competitive year! We are looking at increased training hours for some gymnasts hopefully moving up levels this year!
We are quite sad to say good bye to two of our coaches this year. Naomi has decided to continue with her schooling. She will be missed by all her pre competitive girls and the staff! Shaun has also decided to further his education and the boys will certainly miss his enthusiasm and love for the sport. We wish both Shaun and Naomi much success in the future.

AGM
The Annual General Meeting for the Polarettes and Polar Tumblers Gymnastics Club will be held Tuesday, September 29th at 6:00pm.
Summer Training
Summer training schedules have gone out to the everyone. For the kids 12 and under there was an option to pay for Summer Camp OR pay for competitive training. It depended upon what you and your child would like to do. For the precomp and level 1 training is in the morning so the athletes are not too beat out to train competitively and will not miss their afternoon activities.
For Level 2+ (including boys) they train sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon. Please check your schedule to be aware of training times.
Every child also had the option of paying monthly; this is a cheaper alternative if you plan on attending most of the summer practices - which I highly recommend!!
Year End BBQ
The Year End BBQ for competitive athletes and family members will be held at the Equinox Rox Climbing and Takhini Hot Springs!
Each group is asked to bring something to share with the club:
Level 3: Desserts
Level 2: Drinks
Level 1: Veggie/Fruit Trays
PreComp: Snacks/Munchies
Boys: Meat/Cheese Trays
Year End Awards are also given out at this time! We look forward to welcoming your whole family on Friday, June 5th between 5:00pm and 9:00pm at the Takhini Hot Springs!
Please ensure that your bring your swimsuits, sunscreen, bug repellent and any other outdoors items you may need!
05/13
Yukon Championships
Yukon Championships will be held on May 23rd. This year we will be having some athletes come from Juneau to compete. They would like to do some billeting and we'd like to billet two children together. If you are willing to accept two gymnasts into your home Friday evening to Sunday evening please let us know!
Right now we are thinking the schedule for the championships will be boys and level 1s in the morning with level 2+ in the afternoon. This is subject to change as we are still looking for judges and sorting out the US levels into Canadian levels for the Juneau athletes. We do encourage all of our members to come out and spend the day at our Championships!
Our female precomp athletes have been hard at work learning a display to put off during the competition. We would like for them to show their stuff in between the two competitions; when we have a better grasp on time I will let you know!
Billeting
We have 16 gymnasts travelling from Juneau, Alaska to attend our Championships this year. 4 boys, 12 girls and we are looking for families who are willing to take 2 gymnasts in to billet. We are looking for 8 families who can take these gymnasts in Friday evening and they will be returning on Sunday evening.
Please let me know as soon as possible if your family is able to billet some of our visitors!
Volunteering
For those that remember the section in the Parent Handbook about volunteering - we are asking that everyone get involved this year!
I know that you have all been hard at work selling Raffle Tickets and from the numbers I'm receiving it seems that sales are going really well! Let's keep those ticket sales up; if you finish your books don't be afraid to come looking for more and helping out another group or gymnast! All 5000 tickets MUST BE SOLD!
Once again thank your for your hard work already!
I came back into the gym Tuesday and discovered that in the week I had been gone people had organized a table at the Trade Show for us to sell the tickets at! Quick and great work on that!
A big thank you to all those who participated and a big kudos to Joleen for organizing the table and making the incredible signs!
With Yukon Championships heading this way we will be looking for many volunteers to help our competition run smoothly.
Here are some duties that you can help us out with:
- Flashers/Runners - someone to show the start scores and final scores on each event; they may also be required to take the scores to the final tabulator at the end of the rotation.
- Tabulators - we will need a tabulator for each set of judges. The judges give this person their scores and the tabulator does some quick math to come up with the Final Score
- Friday evening May 22nd - Set up the gym; we'll need lots of bodies to move some equipment around, set up a concession stand, open out the bleachers and dust them etc.
- Saturday afternoon May 23rd - Put the gym back together; people to put the place back into order
- Concession stand - people to work the concession stand during the day
These are some of the jobs that we'll need covered so please let us know what your family would like to do!
Practice Friday, May 22nd
Practice on Friday May 22nd will run from 4:00pm - 6:00pm. Those athletes who are competing at the Yukon Championships are invited to attend.
When you come pick up your athlete - why not plan to help set up the gym?!
Registration forms
Registration forms and money are due May 15th 2009. All cheques must be made payable to Yukon Gymnastics Association (and NOT our club)
Bodysuits/Singlets
All bodysuits and singlets can be purchased directly from Sportees. Please go in as soon as possible for your child to be measured to ensure that there is plenty of time for the suit to be made.
Our level 2+ athletes should already have their competition suits.
Our precomp and level 1 athletes will be buying/wearing their blue suits with the green strips and jewels - no sleeves.
If you do not have a competition suit or would like a new suit we have been in contact with Sportees. We are not going with the velvet material for the new suits; but they will be blue with the green strips and jewels. The cost will be between $50 - $70 and you can purchase them directly from Sportees.
Andrea (at Sportees) is expecting you and your child to come in an be measured. She knows that the competition is May 23rd so we need to get all the kids in as soon as possible - it would be greatly appreciated. The sooner you get in - the faster you can probably get your suit to check the fit etc!
For the boys; they can purchase the shorts, longs and singlets at Sportees if they are competing this year.
May Fees
May fees are now due; for those who pay by credit card I will be processing them shortly as I just got back into town this week so they are little late this month.
Just a reminder for next year that you can choose to pay in full for the year, post-dated cheques or credit card approval.
BC Championships/Western Canadian Championships
Our level 3+ athletes were invited to attend the BC Championships held in Langley, BC on April 18 - 19. Two of our athletes chose to travel to this 800+ athlete competition. They had three disciplines of gymnastics present at their meet - Women's, Men's as well as Power Tumbling and Trampoline.
Kelcie (Level 3) Competed against a group of 47 athletes. She placed 27 in the overall, 25 on floor, 38 on beam, 26 on bars and received and 10 place ribbon on vault. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments!
Corey (Level 4) competed against a group of 16 athletes. She placed 14 in the overall, 16 on beam, received a 10 place ribbon for both vault and bars as well as receiving the Silver Medal on Floor. We are extremely pleased with her accomplishments!
This was a great meet for the girls as they got to see many different levels and NUMEROUS athletes!
Anna (Level 5) competed at the Western Canadian Championships this past weekend in Winnipeg. There are two days of competition at the Westerns. The first day gymnasts compete for spot in the top 8 on each event to make it to event finals. Out of 18 athletes on Day 1 Anna was 13 in the overall, 15 on floor, 13 on both bars and beam as well as 2nd on vault. Day 2 Anna competed in the event finals for Vault and she came home with the Gold Medal! If she see her around be sure to say Congratulations!
Summer
We will be handing out a summer schedule for the athletes to choose the weeks that they would like to attend gymnastics this summer. We would like for all of our gymnasts in the competitive program to choose a couple of weeks to attend.
You must register by the end of June for the weeks that you would like to attend; payment is made in advance is non-refundable.
Gymnastics truly is a year-round sport and to take considerable time off takes considerable time to build back to the same conditioning, flexibility and skills that your athlete has learned over the last number of months.
02/18
Thank you to all those parents and athletes who participated in our Silent Auction and Gym-A-Thon! Our goal was to raise $5000! Unfortuanately we fell a little short of that; we'd like even more participation in our next fundrasing event!
We'd like to have the deposits for the Outside Competitions in this week! Please remember to hand in your deposit the next time you're in the gym.
We'd like to invite parents to come to the gym on Friday, February 27th between 5:30 - 7:00pm to help the girls mentally prepare to perform in front of an audience during the Spring Break Trip.
02/07
Girls Change Room
There is a smell coming from the girls changeroom; as this is not the the first time we've had a smell this year I have decided that we will be throwing everything out next Friday. Everything must be out of the lockers by Thursday, February 12th and I am going to throw everything out that has been left in the room. Please tell your child to keep their empty lockers unlocked when they leave on either Wednesday or Thursday.
I will do this the last Friday of every month to hopefully avoid this smell in the future.
Mountain Shadows Gym Camp
I would also like to let you all know about a camp at the Mountain Shadows Recreation Centre (18 Crystalridge Drive, Okotoks, Alberta, T1S 2C3, Phone 403.938.0GYM)
This is something that you can register for on your own! We do not need to travel down as a team or have a required number to attend. Some of our athletes have attended in the past and have great things to say about the camp!
There are two different camps:
Camp 1 – July 13th – 18th this is a six day gymnastic camp geared to the more advanced gymnast. Gymnasts attending this camp should be experienced at Provincial 2 skills. Our experienced high level coaching staff will advance the skills of any P2 to National level athlete.
Camp 2 – July 20th – 24th this is a five day camp designed for Provincial 1 and Provincial 2 gymnasts or those nearly there! Many of the same advanced coaches teaching lots of new skills suitable to these levels.
If you are interested in sending your child you can find more information at: http://www.mountainshadowsgymclub.com/camps.html
There are a limited number of spaces for both camps; so if you are interested you should register early!
02/04
Fees
Just a quick reminder that all fees are due the 1st of each month. If you pay by credit card; you should see that on your bill quite soon. If you pay by post-dated cheque they will be cashed very soon. Please ensure that all of this can happen with no fuss!
Track Jackets
We need to order new track jackets for some people. If your athlete needs a new jacket or would like to get a jacket please let me know by Wednesday, February 4th as orders need to go in.
We do not have a price for the jackets yet; the more people that order the cheaper they are.
If your child is planning on participating in a competition this year then you will need a track jacket.
Silent Auction
Our annual Silent Auction will be held on Februay 13 and 14. We are requesting that all competitive members donated at least 1 item to the auction. Please have all items into the gym no later than Wednesday, February 11th by 8:30pm. All items should be clearly marked with the athletes' name and approximate value.
Gym-A-Thon
Our annual Gym-a-Thon will run during National Gymnastics Week. We are asking that all athletes be here on Friday, February 13th from 4 - 6:00pm. You are more than welcome to watch and wander around our Silent Auction area during this time.
Each athlete is asked to get pledges to do 100 gymnastics skills! We are asking that the athletes raise at least $100.00!
** If your child cannot make the Friday time slot; they can do their 100 skills during a regular practice!! **
Please let your child's coach know if they will be here on Friday or not.
This money goes towards the up-keep of our club and the day-to-day expenses that are incurred in a not-for-profit organization.

Mock Meet
The Mock Meet is scheduled for this coming Friday, January 30th. All the level 2+ athletes will be competing at this meet. We are hoping to have three panels of judges; but right now it doesn't look like that is going to happen! If you or someone you know is interested in judging please let us know!
As of today we are asking athletes to arrive by 3:30pm for warm up. If we can find more judges this time may change to accommodate them.
01/19
We are well into the New Year and things are the gym are starting to turn towards competition season! The coaches and the gymnasts are excited about the up coming year!
Just a reminder that in order to compete the athletes must have the minimum requirements for Level 1!
Volunteer Hours
As we are a not-for-profit organization we rely heavily on our members to help us keep costs low! As a competitive member you should have received an electronic copy of the Parent Handbook (if you have not - please let us know!) The following is an excerpt straight from the handbook:
The expectation is that all families will contribute time to the Club for various tasks that might otherwise cost the Club money (e.g. gym maintenance) or help with other activities associated with the running of the Club. The Executive recognizes that some jobs require greater time and effort and therefore are more demanding on individuals. Also, some families due to individual circumstances are not able to contribute on a year long basis or may wish to have some flexibility in the types of jobs they wish to volunteer for. The important issue is that all of these jobs should not fall on only a few families.
Volunteer requirements can be met by volunteering an equivalent amount of hours per year as your child trains per week or by volunteering to fill one of the positions outlined below. In order to help ensure volunteer commitments are fulfilled, a postdated cheque, dated June 30, 2009, in the amount of $200 will be collected Monday, October 13th from the families of all competitive and pre-competitive athletes. If you were unable to fulfill your volunteer requirements the cheque will be cashed.
Positions:
- A member of the Polarettes Executive: AGM September 30th, 2008
- Chaperone a trip
- Implement a fundraiser activity
- Meet Director for Yukon Championships
- Judge/Coach coordinator for Yukon Championships
- Pick up and drop off Polarettes Recycling and/or other various driving tasks
- Handyperson for gym things; ex. We would like to fix the area around the end of the beams
- Organize Gym-A-Thon
- To implement and maintain a gym versus gymnast account on fundraising activities
We would like to have at least 4 different fundraisers this year to help offset costs so we would need at least four people willing to take a on a fundraising idea and grow it into fruition.
Again; please let us know if you have not received a copy of the Parent Handbook.
The Board of Directors has also started a fundraising committee. They are hard at work coming up with a viable plan of how best to raise funds for our club. If you have an idea or are able to help out - please get in touch with the Fundraising Committee.
Fundraisers
National Gymnastics Week is Feburary 8 - 15 this year. We thought this would be an ideal time to have a couple of fundraising efforts.
Please be on the look out for Gym-A-Thon letters. The Gym-A-Thon is an annual fundraiser that Polarettes and Polar Tumblers participates in every year. These letters will be handed out within the next week.
Yukon Gymnastics Association (YGA) is also going to run a Fitness Challenge on Sunday, February 8th. A team consists of 5 people and various tasks are laid out for each team to successfully accomplish. If you would like to register a group of 5 please contact Bonita. She can be reached at: 667-7573 or 667-7373 or b-rogers@northwestel.net
Yukon News
Tom Patrick, the sport reporter for the Yukon News, visited our gym on Monday, January 19th. He is going to do an article on the Polarettes and Polar Tumblers so keep your eye out for that! We also had a photographer in the gym so let's keep our fingers crossed that a picture makes it into the paper as well!
12/15
Thank you to everyone who had their registration fees in on time! It makes everything go more smoothly.

Thank you to all those who participate in the level 1 course. Polarettes and Polar Tumblers is very pleased to have new coaches and junior coaches in our gym. Our coaches are the people who keep our place alive!
The level 1 course was a great success and all those who attended learned many things and I see them being put to good use all over the gym!
Level Two
We are very pleased with our four new level 2 technical courses; the way to increase our knowledge in the sport of gymnastics is to increase the knowledge of our coaches. From all reports everyone had a great time and learned quite a bit.
I'd also like to take the time to say thank you to all the demonstrators and all the parents who drove their kids to the gym during odd times! The course wouldn't have been such a success without those dedicated individuals.
Rec Symposium
Once again a big thank you to all those who took our Recreational Symposium last Saturday. We had a good number of old, new and junior coaches turn out and the day was a great success!
Dance Classes
Dance classes are going ahead full speed and the athletes are practicing everywhere! I can see them working on their dance routine here in the gym and it's great to see!
Due to the increased number of athletes taking the dance class; the price has gone down. It is now $43.00 per gymnast. All money was supposed to be in before the start of the classes but I'm still missing a couple of people. If you have not already done so please come to the gym ASAP to pay for the classes. We accept cheque, cash, visa and debit.
Those who already paid the original fee; we will be sure to reimburse you for the correct amount.
Competitions
I sent out an email to all parents of Level 2 athletes and above. Please remember that only those athletes who can fulfill all the requirements of Level 2 are able to travel.
The email indicated your choices for the upcoming competitive season. Thanks to all those who responded on time!
11/01
Level One
The times for the Level 1 course have been decided on.
The course schedule is:
Friday, November 7 from 9:00 - 5:00pm
Saturday, November 8 from 9:00 - 6:00pm.
I recommend that the older athletes who are auditing the course plan on not training Friday evening. I feel this would make your weekend of gymnastics just a little too long with not enough re-coup time in between leaving Friday evening and returning Saturday morning.
Level Two: Training on Monday, November 10th is canceled.
We are fortunate enough to be able to offer a level 2 course for our coaches who have been with us already and have completed their level 1 training.
As many of our competitive coaches will be participating in this course we will need to cancel all classes on Monday, November 10th. The level 2 course will require athletes to help the coaches learn - these demonstrators will also learn quite a bit. I will be contacting people by email to see if their athlete is able to be a demonstrator throughout the level 2 course. The course will be Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (9, 10, 11)
Remembrance Day
As per the parent hand book there will be NO classes on Tuesday, November 11th.
We may still need your athlete to help with the level 2 course though!
Dance Classes
Dance classes start today, November 1st. All participants that still need to pay must pay Polarettes - not Leaping Feats or the dance instructor - Emilie.
Competitions
Please check your email in the next two weeks as I will be giving out information on the competitions for this season.

10/20
Fundraiser
All Purdy's chocolate money should be in by tonight - Monday, October 20th. The orders will be placed this evening and we will know how much money we made!
Special Meeting
We will be having a special meeting on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 6:00-6:15pm in order to review the unaudited 2007/2008 financial statements. Everyone is welcome.
Level One
We will be hosting a Level 1 Technical component in Gymnastics. This course will teach everyone the six dominant movement patterns in gymnastics as well as coaching tips and techniques. We would like for our older competitive gymnasts (12 and up) to audit this course as they are not yet old enough to become certified. We are thinking ahead to our summer camp and what junior coaches will be available to us then. This course is a great opportunity for our competitive athletes to learn a little more about their sport.
The course will be held on Friday, November 7th and Saturday, November 8th. We are looking for as many new coaches and junior coaches as possible!
Rec Symposium
We will be hosting a recreation symposium for all volunteers, junior coaches and coaches of our recreational program. This symposium will be held on Saturday, November 15th. This seminar will be extremely beneficial and informative so we are looking forward to seeing you all there!
Volunteer Commitment
As per our competitive parent handbook we have implemented a new volunteer policy this year. This policy is to encourage all parents to come out and volunteer!! The policy can also be found on the competitive bulletin board in the gym.
10/07
Welcome to our Notices page! Here you will find out what is happening in the gym and any information that you should be aware of.
Physical Testing
Right now the groups are in the middle of doing their beginning of the year physical testing. Some groups have already completed the testing while other groups are planning on finishing up this week. Physical testing will be done throughout various times of the year. Testing will let us know how the athletes are improving and what we need to work on either as a group or individually.
Parent handbooks
Everyone should have received an electronic copy of the handbook as our photocopier is down. Please let Jenn know if you have not received your copy via email yet.
Dance Class
Unfortunately the dance club that we had contact to do our Saturday afternoon classes with recently lost the instructor that was willing to work with our gymnasts. Right now the dance classes are on hold. We will let you know if anything changes.
Fundraiser
We are having a Purdy's Chocolate Fundraiser this year. The fundraiser began on September 22nd and all order need to be in by Saturday, October 18th at 4:00pm. If you have not received your copy of the Purdy's catalogue and order sheet - please let us know!
Friday, October 10 Training
As there is no school on Friday, October 10 - competitive hours may change slightly for this day. Please check with your child's coach to ensure you have the correct time.
Monday, October 13 Training
As per the Parent Handbook; there is no competitive training on Monday, October 13 because it is the Thanksgiving Holiday.
That's all for now!
