CanGym Curriculum
progression reporting for kids
We are switching to CanGym starting September 1, 2026
We're excited to announce that starting September 1st, 2026 we will be transitioning our recreational gymnastics program to CanGym, Gymnastics Canada's nationally recognized badge and level system.
We are actually switching "back" to CanGym, as we had left the program in 2017 because it wasn't serving our small membership base. We found an in-house curriculum tailored for the needs of Yukoners served us better, however, now that we've grown and we are teaching over 1000 children a week in our recreational programming, the CanGym curriculum is a better fit. It has many stages and levels and is designed for a larger membership base club.
CanGym provides a clear, progressive pathway that focuses on developing strong fundamental movement skills, physical literacy, and safe skill progression. Athletes earn badges as they master specific skills and can progress at their own pace while building confidence and competence.
CanGym Curriculum begins at 5 to 6 years old. For information on programming curriculum for infants to age 5 years old, please refer to our Active Start programming page.
To help families understand the transition, our previous class names will align with the following CanGym levels:
Beginner - CanGym Burgundy & Red
This level is designed for athletes who are new to gymnastics or still developing foundational skills. Athletes will learn basic gymnastics movements including rolls, cartwheels, handstands, jumping, balancing, swinging, and safe landings across all apparatus.
The focus is on:
-
Body awareness and coordination
-
Strength and flexibility development
-
Learning gymnastics shapes and terminology
-
Building confidence in a fun and supportive environment
Novice - CanGym Tan & Bronze
Athletes at this level have developed many of the foundational skills taught in Beginner and are ready for more challenging progressions. Classes focus on refining technique while introducing more complex skills and combinations.
The focus is on:
-
Stronger handstands and cartwheels
-
Bridge and backbend progressions
-
Vault and tumbling development
-
Increased strength, flexibility, and body control
-
More independence on apparatus
Intermediate - CanGym Purple & Blue
Athletes in Intermediate classes are developing more advanced gymnastics skills and combinations. They are expected to demonstrate good body control, strength, and technical understanding while working toward increasingly challenging elements.
The focus is on:
-
Advanced tumbling progressions
-
Higher-level bar, beam, and vault skills
-
Linking multiple skills together
-
Increased conditioning and flexibility requirements
-
Greater emphasis on technique and execution
Advanced - CanGym Turquoise & Silver
Advanced athletes are working on the highest levels offered within our recreational pathway. These gymnasts demonstrate strong foundational skills, body awareness, and work ethic while pursuing advanced skill development.
The focus is on:
-
Advanced tumbling and acrobatic skills
-
Complex skill combinations and routines
-
Advanced strength and flexibility development
-
Technical refinement and consistency
-
Preparation for higher-level recreational gymnastics opportunities
Important Information About Class Placement
Because CanGym uses a different progression system than our previous recreational program, some athletes may notice that their new class name does not match their previous class name.
For example, an athlete who was previously enrolled in Intermediate 2 may be placed in a Novice (Tan or Bronze) class under the CanGym system. This does not mean they have moved backward.
The CanGym curriculum organizes skills differently than our previous program. Athletes are being placed based on the CanGym skills and badges they have already achieved, ensuring they are working at the appropriate level within the new national framework.
Our coaching team will carefully review each athlete's progress and place them where they are most likely to be successful, challenged, and confident. As always, athletes will continue progressing as they master new skills and demonstrate readiness for the next badge level.
We are excited to bring CanGym to Yukon Gymnastics Centre and provide athletes with a nationally recognized pathway that clearly celebrates progress and achievement at every stage of their gymnastics journey.
Celebrating Progress and Achievement
At Yukon Gymnastics Centre, we believe that recognizing effort, growth, and participation is an important part of building confidence and a lifelong love of physical activity

CanGym Programs
Athletes in our Bears and recreational CanGym programs participate in Gymnastics Canada's national badge system, which provides clear and measurable skill progression.
Throughout the season, athletes will receive:
-
Visual progress reports showing skill development
-
Coach comments and feedback
-
Progress stickers as skills are achieved
-
CanGym badges when a level is successfully completed
The CanGym system allows athletes and families to clearly see progress over time while celebrating each milestone along the way. Advancement is based on skill mastery rather than age, helping every athlete progress at a pace that is appropriate for their individual development.
