House League & Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD)
Our House League pathway has been designed around the principles of Sport for Life's Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, recognizing that children develop at different rates and that there is no single pathway to success in sport. You can read more the LTAD and early specialization for gymnastics here on our Competition Stream page.
While Sport for Life does classify gymnastics as an early specialization sport, the LTAD also encourages sport organizations to match training, competition, and commitment levels to an athlete's stage of development rather than assuming every participant is pursuing high-performance sport. For many children and families, this means participating in a quality program that balances gymnastics with school, other activities, and family life.
House League supports these principles by:
-
Providing a lower-commitment competition pathway that still offers high-quality coaching and meaningful skill development.
-
Allowing athletes to experience the excitement of competition without the travel and training expectations of a traditional competitive program.
-
Focusing on physical literacy, sound movement patterns, confidence, and enjoyment as the foundation for long-term participation.
-
Giving athletes more flexibility to progress at a pace that matches their goals and readiness.
-
Supporting multi-sport participation, which Sport for Life recognizes as beneficial for many children during their developmental years.
Quality Development, Different Goals
House League is a pathway designed for athletes whose goals, interests, or lifestyles are better suited to a more flexible competition experience.
Athletes learn proper gymnastics technique, develop strength and coordination, and work toward routines and in-house competitions. The difference is that the curriculum places greater emphasis on individual progress, enjoyment, and participation, while the Developmental pathway follows a more structured progression intended to prepare athletes for higher levels of competitive gymnastics.
Because every child develops differently, movement between pathways is encouraged. Some athletes may begin in House League and later decide they want to pursue a higher level of competition. Others may transition from the Developmental pathway into House League as their interests or life commitments change. Neither pathway is considered a one-way decision.
Our goal is to help each athlete find the environment where they will be challenged appropriately, enjoy the sport, and continue participating for as long as they choose. That philosophy is at the heart of Long-Term Athlete Development and aligned with our programming by providing the right opportunities for every athlete to grow and thrive.

Tell me more about House Masters
House Masters is a new flexible option for teens and adults who want to participate in gymnastics training and optional competitions without the commitment of a traditional competitive program.
House Masters trains alongside our Adult Gymnastics program using a punch-pass registration model. This program is self-guided, with a coach available to support - The training is largely self-directed by the athlete. Intended to support former competitive team gymnasts, advanced recreational athletes, and adults beginner or advanced in continuing their love of sport - This is a for-fun competition model in a mature masters meet environment. Coaches are present to supervise for appropriate levels of risk taking and safety, lead warm up, spotting and support towards goals but are not providing a highly structured competitive training model.
A couple masters meets will be available for fun, if there's enough interest. Masters competitions are based on routines built with no strict difficulty requirements, but instead 6 to 10 skills and judged on execution and creativity only.
The minimum age is 16, and there are no exceptions to allow for younger athletes to join. Due to the self-directed nature, prior experience with the sport is required and a firm age minimum. A punch pass of 10 passes, 20 passes, or 50 passes is available for this program.

Due to the more self-directed nature of the House League program, there is no parent commitment requirements or additional fundraising expectations for this group. Adult class punch pass rates apply.

House Masters & Sport for Life
House Masters is built around the principles of Sport for Life (Long-Term Development in Sport and Physical Activity) by providing an opportunity for athletes to continue participating in gymnastics beyond traditional youth competitive programs.
Sport for Life recognizes that not everyone wants, or is able, to continue training in a high-commitment competitive environment throughout adulthood. One of its goals is to ensure there are quality opportunities for people to remain involved in sport in ways that fit their stage of life. We've wanted to start this program for YEARS and it's finally time to make it happen.
House Masters supports the Sport for Life initiative by:
-
Providing a pathway for former competitive gymnasts and experienced athletes to continue training.
-
Offering flexible punch-pass registration that fits around work, post-secondary education, travel, and family commitments.
-
Allowing athletes to set their own goals, whether that's maintaining skills, learning something new, staying active, or preparing for an optional Masters competition.
-
Offering competitions that focus on execution and creativity rather than difficulty requirements, making participation accessible to a wider range of athletes.
Supporting Women in Sport
House Masters also supports an important objective in Canadian sport & a value of the Polarettes: improving the retention of women and girls.
Research shows that many women leave organized sport during late adolescence and early adulthood as priorities shift toward school, careers, and family. Often, the available options for women and girls are either high-commitment competitive programs or leaving the sport altogether.
House Masters helps bridge that gap by offering a flexible option that allows athletes to continue participating without the expectations of a traditional competitive team. Athletes can attend regularly, train occasionally, or step away and return as life changes, while remaining connected to the gymnastics community.
Providing opportunities like this helps keep more women involved in the sport over the long term, as athletes, and often later as coaches, judges, volunteers, and mentors.
At Polarettes, we believe gymnastics should be available at every stage of life. House Masters is one way we're working to make that possible by offering a flexible, enjoyable pathway for experienced athletes to continue participating in the sport they love.

An Inclusive Program
House Masters is a gender-neutral program. Participants are welcome to train and compete for fun in Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG), Men's Artistic Gymnastics (MAG), or Trampoline, based on their interests, background, and goals.
We recognize that adult athletes often have diverse experiences in the sport, and not everyone fits within traditional program structures. House Masters is designed to provide an inclusive training environment where participants can continue enjoying gymnastics in the discipline(s) that interest them, while training alongside a supportive community of athletes with varied backgrounds and experience levels.
Our focus is on safe participation, personal challenge, and creating a welcoming environment where everyone has the opportunity to stay involved in gymnastics for life.
